Unit 2: Communication Skills

Lesson 2 - Extracting Information

Use targeted searches and annotation to benefit production work. use sound and established methods to extract the required information, such as targeted searches and annotation.

Different methods include:
- Skim reading
- scanning
- using an index
-using word and phrase search
- Highlighting
- copy and paste
- writing notes

Annotation is the process by which information can be extracted from written sources. This involves reading through your research and forming an understanding or opinion about what has been written.

Task 1

In pairs think about what information you need to help with your production work. Make an action plan that highlights the main areas for consideration, using the following questions.

What are you looking for?
What sort of horror films are most popular/ what does the public look the most.

Why is it relevant or helpful?
This helps you expand the market of the movie (more people would want to watch it)

Where can you look for information? list your possible sources.
articles, books, survey, internet research, successful movies, reviews etc...

Which part of the production process will it help with?
it can help the script and create ideas.

What information does the source give me?

1. Is the information in depth enough for me? Or is it too superficial
Does the information give you answers to your question?
Does the information given in the types of formats you need (Maps, dates, graphics, etc.)

Can i understand the information?
Is it in a language you can understand?
Is it too scientific or technical?
Does it use too much specialised language that you don't understand?

What information can i use?

Does the information include in the source help me complete my task?
If it does, then you will be able to start "extracting" the information

How will i get the information out of the source?
There are a number of ways to extract information out of a source, depending on the type of source and the type of source and and the equipment available to you. Here are some ways to do it:
- Note taking
- Videotaping
- Tape recording
- Photocopying
- Printing
- Interviewing

Once you have sourced your information:
You need to obtain copies and begin annotating them in order to extract relevant information

- read through your research and highlight relevant sections using a highlighter pen
revisit the work and extract relevant information by making notes...

Am i ready to start putting my research together?

1. Have you double checked factual information  a couple of sources?
2. Have you collected all of the kinds of information you need
3. Have you recorded the bibliographic information for any sources you used?
4. Do you have enough information to begin organising it?

Preparation skills for pitching a media product information

When pitching a media product to a client, the way you communicate knowledge and the way communication is perceived by the client can be the main         0 reason whether or not you will be chosen for the job.

Barriers should be over come to prevent miscommunication

Use of Jargon or slang(overcomplicated language)

letting nerves getting the better of you

Voice is unclear or very soft (speak with a loud or assertive voice)

Lack of interest or topic

Irrelevant rambling

Preparation is too long

When presenting, think about:
body language: effective communication and shows interest

Bad presentation, not looking at audience, no arm movement (expressing) reading off screen,
doesn't want to be there.

Good presentation: eye contact, smiling, passionate body movements.

What i need to improve on, body language, more eye contact, more smiling,

The big O: stuttering 'um' too many times, loud sighing sounds as if she doesn't want to be there, no body language, shutting herself out from her own presentation, monotone voice

Dupsy Abiloa: very passionate over her platform, breaks when needed, good use of tone in voice.

To improve my vocal quality, i will ensure that i use a loud, clear voice. I will not speak to many words at once and take pauses when needed (forgotten what i was going to say or catch my breath without showing)
